When I find the road narrow, and can see no other way of teaching a well established truth except by pleasing one intelligent man and displeasing ten thousand fools. I prefer to address myself to the man. From the Guide for the Perplexed by Jewish philosopher Moses Maimonides, born in Spain March 30, 1135.

Beware of racialism and disrespect for another’s race or religion.

In a world of diversity tolerance should rule the day i.e. tolerance should be the rule of law.

The worst thing is without hope.

The most destructive habit is worry.

The most worthless emotion is self-pity.

The greatest shot in the arm is encouragement.

The most effective sleeping pill is peace of mind.

The most prized possession is integrity.

The most satisfying work is helping others.

The greatest natural resource is youth.

The world most incredible computer is your brain.

The ugliest personality trait is selfishness.

The most beautiful attire is a smile.

The most crippling disease is excuses.

The most dangerous pariah is gossip.

The greatest attitude is gratitude.

Learn from your mistakes and move on.

The sharper your mind is, the further you go.

Develop a sense of urgency in all the things that you do. Speed is everything.

Attitude is a little thing that makes a big difference.

Take into account that great love and great achievements involve great risk.

When you lose, don't lose the lesson.

Follow the three Rs:

Respect for self,
Respect for other and
Responsibility for all your actions.

Remember that not getting what you want is
sometimes a wonderful stroke of luck or a blessing in disguise.

Learn the rules so you know how to break them properly.

Don't let a little dispute injure a great relationship.

When you realize you've made a mistake, take immediate steps to correct it.

Spend some time alone every day.

Open arms to change, but don't let go of your values.

Remember that silence is sometimes the best answer.

Live a good, honorable life. Then when you get older and think back, you'll be able to enjoy it a second time.

A loving atmosphere in your home is the foundation for your life.

In disagreements with loved ones, deal only with the current situation. Don't bring up the past.

Share your knowledge. It's a way to achieve immortality.

Be gentle with the earth.

Once a year, go someplace you've never been before.

Remember that the best relationship is one in which your love for each other exceeds your need for each other.

Judge your success by what you had to give up in order to get it.

Approach love and cooking with reckless abundance.

ALWAYS REMEMBER

Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take but by being awed by the number of breathless beauties of Mother Nature.

Time waits for no one. Profit from each moment given to you for it is very precious.

Cherish your health:

If it is good, preserve it
If it is unstable, improve it
If it is beyond what you can improve, get help

Don't compare yourself with any one in this world. If you compare, you are insulting yourself.

Surround yourself with what you love.
Whether it is family, pets, keepsakes, music, plants, hobbies, whatever.

Your home is your refuge.

The tears happen. Endure grieve and move on. The only person who is with us our entire life, is ourselves.

Be alive while you are alive, don't put a mailbox on the highway of death and just wait in residence for your mail.

Keep on learning:

Learn more about computers, crafts, gardening,
WHATEVER. Never let the brain idle. An idle mind is the devil’s workshop. The devil’s name is Depression.

Keep only cheerful friends. The grouches pull you down.

Throw away non-essential numbers. This includes age, weight and height. Let the doctor worry about them. That's why you pay him / her for the service.

If a problem can be solved, no need to worry about it.

If a problem cannot be solved what is the use of worrying?

GETTING ALONG WITH PEOPLE

Don't say everything you think.

Watch your body language. It may say more than you intend to or want
to say.

Make few promises but keep the ones you make if you want to be trusted.

Learn to praise good work, no matter who did it including your enemies.

Have empathy. Make merry with those who rejoice. Mourn with those who suffer.

Keep an open mind. If you are the only one coming up with the right answers, something is wrong.

Discuss, don't argue.

Let your merits speak for themselves but ready to discuss
when asked.

Do not talk about another's weaknesses unless necessary.

Treat everybody with importance.

6 PRINCIPLES OF LIFE

* No point of using limited life to chase after unlimited money.

* No point in earning so much money that you cannot live to spend it all.

* Money is not yours until you started to spend it.

* When you are young, you use your health to chase your wealth; when you are old, you use your wealth to buy back
your health. The difference is that, it is too late.

* How happy a man is, is not how much he has but how little he needs.

* No point in working so hard to provide for the people you have but have no time to spend time with them.

Remember this -- We come to this world with
nothing, we will leave this world with nothing!

THE ABC OF FRIENDSHIP

Always be honest. Would you want them to lie to you?

Be there when they need you or you may wind up
alone.

Cheer them on. We all need encouragement now and then.

Don't look for their faults, even if you have none.

Encourage their dreams. What would we be without them?

Forgive them, you just may do something wrong sometime.

Get together often. Misery loves company, so does glee.

Have faith in them. The human animal is remarkable.

Include them, you may need to be included sometime.

Know when they need a hug. Couldn't you use one?

Love them unconditionally. That is the only condition.

Make them feel special. Aren't we all special?

Never forget them. Who wants to feel forgotten?

Offer to help and know when "No thanks" is just politeness.

Praise them honestly and openly.

Quietly disagree. Noisy "no" makes enemies.

Say you're sorry, don't let them assume it.

Talk frequently, communication is important.

Use good judgement.

Verbalize you feelings.

Wish them luck, hopefully good.

(E)xamine your motives before you "help" out.

Your words count. Use them wisely.

Zip your lips when told a secret.

THE LANGUAGE OF VIRTUE THAT WE MUST LEARN TO SPEAK

Speak less words of complaint and more of forgiveness as complaints bring about hatred while forgiveness is wisdom.

Speak less words of sarcasm and more of respectfulness
as sarcasm reveals disparagement while respectfulness increases understanding.

Speak less words of harm and more of thoughtfulness as harm causes contradiction while thoughtfulness develops
friendship.

Speak less words of command and more of discussion as command forces acceptance while discussion is true
leadership.

Speak less words of criticism and more of encouragement as criticism creates barriers while encouragement nurtures
potential.

Nowadays old people do not die away; they just
fade away into cyberspace.

Where there is no vision, the people perish. Bible Proverbs Chap 29 Verse 18.

God works in mysterious ways. Christian saying.

No humans except the liars can claim they have met the Almighty.

Fear is a powerful and unpleasant human emotion that overrules reason.

He who pays the piper calls the tune.

Challenges and hardships in life are the fuel for the creative minds.

Always keep your words nice and sweet, otherwise you might have to eat them back.

Opportunities are for those who can see beyond the problem.

Keep the marriage alive as if you are still dating.

Attitude is a little thing that makes a big difference.

If desire is your wishbone, then courage be your backbone to make you excel and incentive to make any dream you dare to dream come true.

You can't make someone love you. All you can do is to be someone who can be loved; the rest is up to the person to realize your worth.

We spend too much time looking for the right person to love or finding fault with those we already loved, when in fact we should be perfecting that love.

There is honour among thieves.
There is remedy for everything but death.
Those who laugh last laugh the best.
Those who ride on a tiger dare not dismount.
Times change, and we change with them.
To err is human; to forgive divine.
Tomorrow is another day.
Too many cooks spoil the broth.
Truth is stranger than fiction.
Two heads are better than one.
Two negatives make an affirmative.
Two wrongs don’t make a right.
Wake not a sleeping lion.
Walls have ears.
What can't be cured must be endured.
What is yours is mine and what is mine is mine.
What the eye doesn't see, the heart doesn't grieve over.
When in doubt, leave out. (A maxim for authors.)
When in Rome, do as the Romans do.
When one door shuts, another opens.
When the cat is away the mice will play.
Where there is will there is a way.
While there is life there is hope.
Who knows most says least.
Wise men learn by other men's mistakes; fools, by their own.
You can bring a buffalo to the river but you cannot make it drink.
You never know what you can do till you try.
You pay your money and you take your choice.

Gluttony kills more than the sword.
Take your time and time will take you.
The eyes are the window of the soul.

If this video is not edited, it could be that there was a door where the wall is now. The image of the female walking into an invisible entrance (as if through the wall), could have been a door of an office or a lift door there. It was naturally recorded by nature a long time ago and then due to unknown reasons it is replayed as recorded by this CCTV video. Warren Buffet, 78, the world's richest man. Forbes magazine March 2008. Bill Gates is second.

His advice to young people:

"Stay away from credit cards & bank loans and invest in yourself and remember:

Money doesn't create man but it is the man who created money.

Live your life as simply as possible.

Don't do what others say - listen to them, but do what you feel good doing. Don't try to show off, just be yourself and do what you enjoy doing

Don't follow brand names; just wear those things in which you feel comfortable.

Don't waste your money on unnecessary things; rather just spend on those things you really need.

After all, it's your life so why allow others to rule your life?"

His key business maxim: Be fearful when others are greedy and vice versa.

Remark. Sentences 3 & 6 also advises you not to follow 100% of his principles.

Simple safeguards to keep your devices secure

BY SUSANNA KHOO

BYTZ@THESTAR.COM.MY

While the mobile security and privacy threats remain very real and imminent, the steps to prevent such problems are really quite straightforward and easy to do.

Following are some practical tips, courtesy of security specialists Symantec Corporation, Sophos Ltd, Trend Micro Inc and F-Secure (M) Sdn Bhd, that you should take note of:

  1. Use your device’s built-in security features

Configure your security settings so that functions such as location sharing are disabled and passwords are not saved but need to be manually keyed in each time.

You can also make your device more secure by activating its lock function and requiring an identification action such as a fingerprint scan, keystroke pattern, numeric PIN or alphanumeric password in order to access the device.

   2. Use strong passwords and secure Internet connections

Unique and strong passwords will help prevent valuable information from being stolen from your device. Using a different password for each and every app would be best but you would need to ensure that you have a good way of remembering those passwords if you choose to go this route.

Avoiding open and unsecured Internet connections such as free public WiFi will also reduce risk of online threats on your mobile device.

   3. Never jailbreak or root your device

Use your device as recommended by the manufacturer instead of modifying the version of the iOS or Android operating system that has been installed. This is usually done to install pirated games and apps for free but this makes it easier for spyware to operate on your device.

   4. Be cautious when choosing and installing apps

It’s a vast universe out there in the World Wide Web and, at times, it’s hard to tell the good guys from the bad ones. It therefore pays to be extra careful when downloading apps from the Internet. If something is too good to be true, it probably is. Do background checks on developers if you need to be sure, and scrutinise an app’s ratings and reviews as well.

It’s also a better idea to download apps directly from the Google Play Store for Android devices rather than from third party websites since downloads from some of these sources may contain malware.

Do have a close look at the Terms and Conditions as well as permissions requested by an app prior to installing it, as you don’t want to unknowingly allow developers to track and collect personal data which is unnecessary for running the app.

   5. Scrutinise notifications and services running on your device

Stay alert whenever you receive any notification on your device. Some may contain malicious links or cleverly trick you into submitting personal information to cybercriminals.

Also, pay special attention to services running in the background on your device that seem unfamiliar or strange. You will have to refer to online guides on how to check, as it differs among devices.

The principle of “when in doubt, throw it out” could help save you a great deal of trouble later on.

   6. Log out immediately

This is especially crucial for social media apps where the chances of your data being misused are higher. Make it a habit to log out of such apps and re-enter login information each time you use them.

   7. Stay up-to-date

Take time to pick out a preferred mobile security software and install it on your device. Make sure to constantly update it, and don’t forget to check for updates for all your apps and to install any available patches for your device’s operating system as well. Set up routine scans for your device, and review the logs each time a scan is concluded.

People that I am very thankful
for during my travelling days:

On the morning 8th December
1981 at a little over 4 a.m. Singapore time, my bus from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
arrived at an immigration check point and after clearance we waited for a taxi.
I and my wife boarded a taxi with a huge signboard on its top. The
driver was very kind and informative about Singapore and when we arrived at our
relative's condominium, he even guided us to the telephone booth and gave me a
10-cent coin to call my sister-in-law.

The taxi driver was very
courteous and helpful throughout like telling us the latest developments and
interesting places to visit in Singapore and we appreciated his presence with
us while we waited. He must be a very patriotic man in safeguarding Singapore's
image.

My trip to Kuala Lumpur on the
24th November 2000 was very enjoyable.

The new KL International
Airport was a splendid place.

A good, caring and friendly
Indian Car-Park cashier even advised us to use the lift when we hesitated at
the downward escalator. It was our first time at KLIA so we did not know
lifts were nearby to our left side. With the lift, our goods remained on the trolley.
His advice saved us a lot of energy and time. We were rushing for the bus to
Genting Highlands.

I am still very thankful to
him even to this day.
